PROENERGY Unveils New 48-MW PE6000 Turbine

PROENERGY unveiled a new, 48-MW aeroderivative turbine that provides firm power generation for more than 40,000* American homes. The PE6000 is designed for dispatchable power applications to quickly close the gap between power supply and demand that often occurs during severe weather, solar ramp off, and days with low or limited renewable production.

Each PE6000 begins with a PROENERGY-overhauled engine core from the CF6-80C2, found in aircraft including the Boeing 747. The concept of matching a flight engine core with aeroderivative parts was born and executed through a collaboration between a major European utility and PROENERGY. That engine—which used market available aeroderivative components and now has more than 180 starts and 8,000 run hours—led to a seven-year, $115-million investment in the PE6000 program to include R&D, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

“Our in-house engine and repair expertise was a critical enabler of the PE6000 program,” says Rob Andrews, PROENERGY SVP Operations. “We developed other key areas of expertise in system and component design, materials engineering, and manufacturing excellence to progress our R&D program both internally and in collaboration with key partners and suppliers. The result is a product manufactured proudly with every new part to PROENERGY design and specification.”

PROENERGY has manufactured two PE6000 turbines to date. One unit is installed in a WattBridge generating facility in Houston with more than 100 starts and 750 hours of runtime. The second unit is now ready for testing, and six more units are scheduled for validation in WattBridge facilities. These first eight units alone can provide grid-firming capability to more than 320,000 American homes, and further production will support reliable power generation for millions.

“We aim to deliver exactly what the world needs right now: low-cost, dispatchable generation,” says Jeff Canon, PROENERGY President and CEO. “Our company was founded on finding a better way; for us, this meant giving flight engines new life and becoming an OEM for aeroderivative turbines.”

PROENERGY Awarded Total Care Service Agreement for Sharm El Sheikh and Port Said Power Plants in Egypt

SEDALIA, MO, October 12, 2023 – Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has awarded PROENERGY a total care service agreement (TCSA) for eight LM6000 gas turbines—seven LM6000 PC units and one LM6000 PF unit—totaling 372 MW.

PROENERGY enters the TCSA with East Delta Electricity Production Company (EDEPC), an EEHC subsidiary responsible for the operation and maintenance of power plants within its jurisdiction. The contract manages all maintenance events for the gas turbine packages during the term—including but not limited to hot sections, combustors, and major overhauls—at the Sharm El Sheikh and Port Said Power Plants.

In 2022, the Sharm El Sheikh Power Plant successfully operated one unit on a hydrogen-natural gas blend during COP27, the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“This Contract represents the start of a long-term partnership with PROENERGY in Egypt,” says EDEPC Chairman Mohamed Abu Senna. “We are confident in PROENERGY’s capabilities to provide reliable and responsive maintenance for our LM6000 assets at Sharm El Sheikh and Port Said Power Plants.”

“We are proud to grow our strategic partnership with EEHC and support energy reliability for two major cities in Egypt,” says PROENERGY Chief Commercial Officer Carlos Picon. “We thank the leadership of EEHC for their trust in us to provide total care services for this critical infrastructure, and we greatly respect their vision—which aligns with PROENERGY efforts—to decarbonize aeroderivative technology.”

WattBridge Now World’s Largest LM6000 Fleet Owner as the 288-MW Brotman Facility Begins Commercial Operations

SEDALIA, MO, May 1, 2023 – PROENERGY Services announced today commissioning of the WattBridge Brotman Generating Station in Brazoria County, Texas. Brotman is the fifth new power-generation installation in the WattBridge fleet in just 36 months, which brings the company’s support within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) zone to 1,824 MW operating for 1.2 million homes.

Powered by six PROENERGY LM6000 gas-turbine packages, the 288-MW Brotman station supports renewable development and delivers energy security with fast-start, reduced-emission peaking power. WattBridge, an independent power producer, has rapidly expanded its operating portfolio from six LM6000 units in January 2021 to 38 units today, making the Texas-based company the largest LM6000 owner in the world.

The Texas State Legislature identified the need for more dispatchable generation in the 87th and current 88th legislative sessions. WattBridge plans to develop at least 4,000 MW in Texas, but those plans may be forced to change due to developing changes with the market structure, according to WattBridge President, Mike Alvarado.

“We’ve been proud to contribute to the Texas Miracle of affordable energy security with 2,400 MW operational or under construction and at least a further 1,600 MW in advanced development that could be online by 2026,” he says. “Our business requires the PCM (Performance Credit Mechanism) as adopted by the PUCT (Public Utilities Commission of Texas) to support new development and retain existing dispatchable generation; without the regulatory certainty that allows us to invest in a 30-year asset, we simply cannot move forward.”

The PCM initiative, which is the sole existing legislation to solve Texas grid reliability issues with new generation, was passed by the House State Affairs Committee to include a cost cap on the reliability program of $500 million per year. According to PROENERGY CEO Jeff Canon, these guardrails will render virtually any investment in dispatchable generation uneconomical.

“No owner can withstand the proposed changes to the PCM, and PROENERGY provides, hands down, the lowest installed rate in the industry,” he says. “I suspect that not one megawatt of dispatchable power could be built; in fact, the movable nature of dispatchable power might see units redeployed out of the state.”

Alvarado added that the cost cap, while intended to protect Texas consumers, will have the opposite effect.

“This isn’t a guardrail for consumers; it’s an arbitrary legislative opinion about how much reliability the State will allow in any year regardless of load changes, reliability needs, or resource mix,” he says. “Within a few years, the Texas Miracle will dry up, energy security will suffer, and everyday Texans will be left holding the bag.”

PROENERGY Kicks Off Nearly $30 Million Advanced Manufacturing Initiative

SEDALIA, MO, August 2, 2022 – PROENERGY announced today a $28.8-million investment on an advanced manufacturing initiative, starting with the recent acquisition and proven application of a 3D hybrid printing machine. As part of the company’s vertically integrated aeroderivative power services, PROENERGY is creating a robust supply of critical parts for LM6000 gas turbines.

This initiative enables the company to maintain reduced manufacturing and repair times, says Jeff Canon, PROENERGY CEO.

“Independently fortifying our parts supply enables us to maintain our 120-day turnarounds for major overhauls, maintain world-class responsiveness, and progress the greater goal of global energy security,” he says. “More importantly, these are critical steps in supporting renewable power generation and moving the energy transition forward.”

As part of its advanced manufacturing initiative, the company’s first major acquisition is a DMG MORI LASERTEC 125 DED hybrid machine. One of only a handful in the world, this technology enables manufacturing industrial-scale parts of any complexity in a small amount of time.
